OFF TO TOWN

On the agenda today is a trip into Tangier.  Our hotel the Hilton Al Houara has a sister in town, the Hilton Tangier City Centre…..catchy name……and we have a transfer available every day at 10am which returns at 4pm and should give us enough time to hit the hot spots.  Traffic gets pretty thick as we get into town, slows down, but gives us a chance to check out the buildings, both residential and commercial.  A lot of it looks fairly new or updated, and there are many projects under construction.  Tangier is getting pretty high marks as a vacation destination these days, and as a Marrakech alternative, it is more budget friendly, while still offering the medina experience, a bucket load of restaurants, and all the culture, flavour, and aromas you want to soak in. Ok not on the same scale as Marrakech, but some might prefer the smaller condensed version.  I found it to be just wonderful and enjoyed the more civilized smaller Medina, and hung with a few locals for morning coffee while the goats were searching for purses I believe.  Pictures and captions will tell the story, but I just loved the waterfront, and a side trip up the hill to Cafe Hafa.  Tangier is part of the so called Moroccan Riviera, although I always thought that was more the coastline along the Alboran Sea……separating Spain and Morocco which most people just call the Mediterranean.

We are heading over to Tamuda Bay in a few days……I thought this coast was more the Moroccan Riviera but what do I know.
The promenade along the beach downtown is really well thought out……..wide open and raised to street level behind…..ramps to underground parking……retail, food service, washrooms, underneath the promenade below that railing at beach level. At least a few km long.
Beach dogs roam around freely…….some of these guys are tagged……not sure how that works.
Look at that…..Sibylle found herself a Longchamp purse……totally original……..no replica…..and just $15
Phew……..thankful it was #1
OK Cafe Hafa……quite a hike to get there to this cafe/restaurant that is perched on a hillside with terrific views over the sea.
Looking down towards the harbour and old town. Many famous people have visited this cafe but most notably and widely reported, The Rolling Stones, who liked to drink sweet Moroccan mint tea and eat majoun cookies loaded with hash. It is still a hash hangout best I can tell as I was approached on the way in……”You want the hash?” No I didn’t……
My hangout waiting for the ride home
We are catching some beautiful sunsets these past few days
