Make it to Manitoba

October 6

Thunder Bay (Kakabeka Falls) to Falcon Lake Manitoba

We had a nice viewing of the falls this morning, although I must say the volume of water flowing over the brink was substantially less than during my last visit with Sid & Co.. Still quite the sight. It was back onto the highway at around 9am, heading straight west and hoping to reach Manitoba. It sure takes a long time to get out of Ontario doesn’t it? I immediately noticed a huge increase in traffic volume on the road, and particularly of the transport truck variety. I enjoy following them as they run at a good steady pace that works well for Plan B, although they struggle more than we do on the uphill sections. More than once I was hoping to have my old CB radio on board……..do truckers still use them?……..or is it all cell phones now?

The topography/scenery has certainly changed, and must say it’s pretty boring by comparison, but still beautiful colours everywhere, and many interesting sights along the way………..I mean who goes to Ignace without stopping for a picture with the Beaver, or Max the Moose in Dryden, or Huskie the Muskie in Kenora……….all Canadian institutions!

MAX was COVID ready……mask and all……..don’t want to catch the Moose19……make you horny
That’s one husky muskie

Finally, the Manitoba Border……….

Falcon Lake is just past the border with Ontario, and is a seasonal playground for folks from Winnipeg which is just an hour away, and for travelers passing through heading east and west. Great beach, big lake, fishing, hiking, golf course…….. a true fair weather camping resort. However, on October 6, it is pretty much shut down……….all stores and restaurants closed, nobody in the campground office, pretty much deserted except for a handful of diehard campers, and people like us on the way through. It must be a hopping place in the summer, but nobody around, so we grabbed a full service site and settled in for the evening………..a few friends dropped by to say hello……walked right through our site……..fearless

The healthy menu options at the beach cafe

We are up early tomorrow with a longer drive through to Moose Jaw. I know the scenery will be even more blaaahhhh than today, but we will plough our way through and get it done.
