Cruising Vumbura

Our cruise last night was a welcome departure from the bouncy bouncy ride in the 4×4, and we have decided that afternoons for the next couple of days here at Little Vumbura will be spent on the water……..tonight we will take a ride in a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe……..this one just happens to be made of fibreglass, but you can’t tell unless you look closely…..shhhhhhh.

The question is, Will my ass fit in this thing?

Emang is in fine spirits this morning, and promises a full day of game sighting………one other truck from our camp will be out at the same time, and the guides communicate and share info over the radio constantly. Sam is in the other truck, and radios over that he has found lions. We follow his directions and arrive at a grassy plain, long grass, and we can barely see the pair until we are almost on top of them. They don’t seem to mind a bit, and we happily sat about twenty feet away. Emang explained that this was a mating pair, with the big male being one of two that usually hang around together……..obviously this fella won the prize. Now here is the juicy stuff…….a mating session can last 3-4 days……..during the first couple of days, they will get together every fifteen minutes or so, but this will fall off to every half hour/45 minutes/hour, as the session moves into day 3-4. Not that there is a lot of foreplay involved or anything, and this guy can only last for like fifteen seconds, if that, but it sure seems like a gruelling schedule to me. Jutta agrees……..thank god. So you have to hang around and watch, and the pair don’t seem to mind one little bit, so we make sure this is day one, and stick around for the instant replay fifteen minutes later.

Big Cat Porno

Feel like a smoke?

Time to go and visit the loser who is lying beside a termite mound a short distance away, and looking good I must say. Emang explains that if for any reason Mr. Lucky cannot fulfill his duties, it is possible that as first runner up, Mr. Cutie Pie might be called upon to step in and fulfill his duties.

Outside of spotting some elephants, zebra, giraffes, and a multitude of birds, that’s about a wrap for our morning…….we had a nice coffee break in leopard country but they were nowhere to be found. Back to camp for brunch, swim, siesta.

Our canoe ride turned out to be a blast, once you got used to the weight shift of the poler on the back…….I really felt like we were going to tip more than once, but that happens rarely according to Emang……..we send him off in the first canoe as bait for the crocs. Great sundowner stop on an island before heading back to camp……amazing how a couple of drinks makes the ride feel smoother…….they should give us shots before heading out.

These frogs are so tiny……..not more than an inch long, but you should hear their voices at night

Max, our poler

Yet another great meal for dinner and we are off to bed……..early start again tomorrow
