Tour de Victoria

October 30

It was a much different feel being here in an urban RV park as opposed to the forested and beach settings of the past few weeks.  We knew that by 11am today we would be changing our overnight spot #27 to our spot for the next week, #29.  If the current occupants of #29 had decided to move their asses this morning, we could have switched over Plan B to its new home and headed out to start our day, but nooooooooooooo………..I don’t know if pretty boy was doing his hair, or what, but he didn’t even look like he was going anywhere until probably 10:30………..10:30, 30 minutes before they are required to leave, and the absolute deadline before Jutta’s internal alarm goes off and we must contact management.  In the end it all worked out.  I started prepping for the move, and by that time, pretty boy was outta there.  Our new spot is literally surrounded by half million dollar rigs, but none as cute as ours…….that’s what we’re going for here……cute.

Move done, we head up to the office to rent some bikes for the rest of the day…….nice ride, 5 speed hybrid with a cool paint job……seats adjusted, tires pumped, away we go.  We rode into town quickly, with the wind…….oh, I forgot to mention the wind, the gale force wind……..not to worry, the winds are predicted to diminish this afternoon…….right!  Bike lanes everywhere in this town, and even designated traffic signals just for bikes.  What a treat to ride in that environment in an unfamiliar town.  We make our way over to Fishermans Warf….80% closed for the season…….then back too the provincial legislature……very nice, some new major landscaping work going on out front,  and then it’s lunch.

We try a couple of spots but both closed for the season, before running head on into Finn’s, a place we have booked for dinner in a few days……..on Sam’s recommendation we are ordering the salmon burger……fantastic.    With a full belly and a beer in the tank to boot, we are off in search of the Patagonia store to buy another pair of these pants I wear constantly, and run into some great stores along the way. A hunch from an earlier map viewing takes us up channel from the Johnston Street Bridge along Store Street to a former industrial area, now being infiltrated with retail, design, small manufacturing, shops, restaurants, and some cool residential condo buildings.  What a great area…….looks like more is in the works for this part of town……..buy it now.  All in all, a pretty quick view of a very small part of Victoria, but most impressed with what we saw.

Nice!
High tea?
Beautiful building

The ride back home was as expected…….into the wind, but not bad though as there are very few hills in the area.  Our host clues us in one the surrounding area, and why we should feel safe during of stay.  The Department of National Defence (DND), has a huge facility right next door, and in fact, the property where the RV park is now, used to be part of the complex.  The RV Park office, built in 1920, used to be the check-in MP station for the facility, and in the back of the building were cells for those who stepped out of line (bars still on the windows).  A little bit of history we weren’t expecting.
Hoping for a stunning Blue Moon tomorrow, although tonight’s wasn’t bad at all.

Sounds like a place we would like to visit sometime. We were planning a stop there on our Alaskan cruise. Maybe next year.
