October 29
It was up early and on the road today for a couple of reasons……..number one was that they close Hwy 4 (the only way in and out of Tofino by land) every day between 9am and noon for a road widening project at Kennedy Lake, and that is about an hour from our campsite, plus, it would be nice to get to Victoria in time for an afternoon activity. Hwy 4 is a real piece of work when you are hauling a trailer, with or without the construction zone. I think I mentioned it on the way in a week ago, and it was even less fun in the dark at 7:00am. Either way, we made it through, stopped for fuel in Port Alberni……..next stop Victoria.

We are staying at a very small “urban” RV park on the west side of the outer harbour with full services including cable…….get out!……..haven’t watched TV in over a week. Really nice place…..excellent location…….I am sure we will enjoy our stay here. They are all back-in spots at this park, but that is such a non-event anymore I can’t tell you…….piece of cake. Next door is a collection of elaborate houseboats…….more like househomes…..many are 3 storeys, and really well done, and beyond that is the marina with a gathering of various watercraft, but I’m sure some of them are “live-on” situations. There are some beautiful rigs in this RV park…….googled a few, and they are half million dollars each, easy, but I guess if you sell your house in boringville, buy a small condo there to be close to the grandkids, and spring for the BIG RIG and hit the road, it makes a lot of sense, for a lot of people.

All of our stop gap measures to secure the awning supports appear to have worked, and I haven’t ripped the exhaust vents out of the roof.
Our host mentioned there was a nice waterfront trail that we could see across the bay from the campground, which went all the way to downtown, and that was enough for Jutta……..we are going, no questions asked…….. guessing around 3km to town. The trail is great, hugging the shore all the way, and is spotless…..not a piece of garbage or even a cigarette butt to be found. The properties along the route are really nice, and a mixture of high rise/low rise condo’s, some single family, and some attached town homes…….great. We wandered around town a little, made a reservation at an Italian place for next week, stopped for a beer (essential), visited an underwhelming Chinatown, and talked about our route for tomorrow with bike rentals. The walk back went pretty quickly because we took fewer pictures and knew the route, but I did hop over the wire onto the shore rocks at one point to grab an interesting driftwood piece……..a work of art in the making, now drying on the tailgate.

Although we could have gone shopping and cooked up a storm here, we opted for the much easier Thai joint 10 minutes away…….good but not outstanding……..but along the way we came across a big outdoor market inside the boards of an outdoor rink, complete with food trucks…….crap, wish we had know about that before ordering the Thai. All munched out, and watching old TV….what a gas….Hogans Heroes, Startrek, Nash Bridges, etc., etc……
