It’s Raining in the Rain Forest

October 27

We have no excursions planned for today and have just decided to let the day unfold and possibly do a few of the smaller things we have talked about.  The big reason of course is the rain.  It arrived last night, and is expected to hang around for at least the next few days, so we are very happy to have done the fishing and bear viewing excursions ahead of its arrival.
One thing we must do though…….laundry.  Our camp has fantastic, newish, washroom and shower facilities that are cleaned numerous times per day, but the laundry won’t be operational until next year, but we did see one in town the other day, so we are off.

Even the gulls are just hanging around today

Part of the plan is to have breakfast in town while the laundry is churning, and I know where I’m headed……..Rhino Coffee, home of the BRONUT…….we can’t wait.  Two bronuts, one sour cream glazed, one double chocolate, and two large latte’s are gone before the wash cycle is done.

BRONUT II

Jutta fires the clothes into the dryer, and we are off to find her some new hiking boots/shoes……..her latest pair of salomon’s are a couple of years old, soaked, leaking, a little torn, and for sure they have a lot of miles on them…….time for some new treads. She tried on quite a few……different brands, styles, but when the ruby slippers came out of the box, it was all over.  Click those heels and see what happens!

We’re not in Kansas anymore

Back to the ranch to drop the clothes…….still raining……and we have decided to go for a hike……two short loops through the rainforest about twenty minutes down the road.  This is another boardwalk hike, keeping all foot traffic off the forest floor.  Again we are treated to massive growth, huge nurse trees, and lush greenery everywhere.  One sign tells us that the Pacific Rim Rainforest receives 120” of rain per year, compared to 60” in Vancouver, and 11” in Princeton (south BC interior).  By now though, I and feeling like a fair bit of the annual is running down my back. We do a couple of side roads on the way home and check out Brice Bay,and the local links, Long Beach Golf Club.  I think it’s a nine hole course but there is nobody around to ask………hmmmm……maybe because of the RAIN.

LOG BRIDGE
We got the permit today…..no more tickets
Love the logo……not sure the course is as nice

Back at Plan B, I have time for a shower and a change before we head literally next door to the Long Beach Lodge  for dinner.  This is a lovely facility and we are eating in the Great Room, a big beamed, vaulted affair, with a huge wall of windows staring out at Cox Bay as all the surfers are catching their last waves of the day as the sun goes down……….sorry, that sounds good but it’s total bullshit…….there was NO sun today………let’s just say, last waves before it got dark.  Dinner was just ok, but like I have said before, we are pretty snooty and picky, so no big surprise there.  The best thing about dinner was that they had the Quails Gate Foch available, ……..I tested the waiter to see if he would pronounce it properly and he did, but we had a laugh about our earlier experience with the name back at Quails Gate Winery.

Nice spot for dinner

Back home we try a couple of Alfred Hitchcock classics before calling it a day, and a pretty full day at that for a couple with no plans.
