Don’t Text me Telegraph Me

October 20

Huge had a nice sleep in this morning as we have nothing on the agenda……..hold on, “Nothing on the agenda?” It’s true……..unfortunately everything up in this neck of the woods is closed for the season……we thought about going over to Alert Bay on the ferry, but we have already been told that most of the shops and restaurants have shut it down over there…….our efforts to find a fishing charter or expedition have come up empty…….looks like we should have been here a few weeks ago when everyone was still operating.  Not to worry we will find something to do.
This morning a gorgeous mountain appeared NE of us……waaaaay in the distance…….and I have been trying to figure out which one it is………trying to track NE from our location on Google Maps, but can’t find it…….anyone recognize this beauty?

I did my now famous bacon and eggs outside this morning in my jammies, and Jutta did her usual, plug in everything electrical you can find……and popped a breaker……….no damage done……….electric frying pan, kettle, and toaster, is not a good combination on the same circuit.  We are learning.

We decided to take a run down the road about 15km to Telegraph Cove, a fairly well known location for kayaking, whale watching, fishing, etc…….to see what it was all about……..deserted!  You can tell that this place is hopping in the summer, as there are pay parking lots in the town, and a number of large overflow lots just up the hill.  We saw one person working on a pump at the campground, and 4 twenty somethings heading back to their car, and that was it.  However, we did give this little town the full going over, walking it from end to end (most of it built on pilings, or as Jutta would say “stilts”).  Really really interesting place with a fishery/canning background, that got its name from……you guessed it…….they set up a telegraph station here back in 1912.  This is a hopping off point for ecotourism, and apparently tons of killer whales frequent the waters offshore in season.  Very sorry we missed it.

On the way to Telegraph Cove is BEAVER COVE…..big logging operation……..preparing for transport to the mills

Port McNeil was next on the list, as we had heard about a pretty good hike following the shore out of town and back.  We think we found the trail, but pretty blah blah soggy no view, so we cut through the trees and made it down to the water…….much more interesting, but still no great shakes, especially when it started to rain.  Back to camp we went………Jutta got stuck into a book, and I decided to process some pictures and catch up on this blog thing.

It could be we will blow this pop stand tomorrow and head down to Tofino a couple of days early.  Things are open there and we have already booked a fishing trip……..Jutta is excited, and I have to agree……..another 6 hour drive with some delays on Hwy 4 expected……..will be nice to settle in again for a week or so before wrapping it up in Victoria.  Hope you are all well.  Cheers.

Thanks for all the pictures. Love all the restaurant signs! Moving on to Tofino sounds like a good plan. Safe drive.

  3. I send the picture of the Mountain and the old Dodge truck to Jon . . . They look like paintings to me!!!! Can’t wait to see your shots in Tofino. Too bad stuff is closed but it gives you a different perspective – beautiful but tough area to live in in the off-season! BTW – you were lucky to be able to get out of the truck on the ferry. Up until a few weeks ago Kelly told us no one was allowed out of their vehicle on the ferry so that sat below in their cars for the entire crossing! Brave man driving that big rig into that little, teeny, tiny space!!!Westward ho!
